India
Raj Kamal Jha is Chief Editor of The Indian Express where he has worked since 1996. The newspaper and its journalists have won the International Press Institute's India Award for Excellence in Journalism four times. As part of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, The Indian Express most recently probed the Swiss Leaks, Panama Papers and Paradise Papers to reveal details of Indian individuals and companies related to offshore accounts in tax havens, a project for which the Consortium won the Pulitzer Prize in 2017. For leading the newspaper's investigative journalism -- in a range of areas from politics and business to health and education -- Raj was awarded Journalist of the Year at the National Red Ink Awards by the Mumbai Press Club.
Raj is also an internationally acclaimed novelist whose fiction has been translated in over a dozen languages including German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Turkish and Italian. His latest novel The City and The Sea exploring the afterlife of a rape in New Delhi has been published in India by Penguin Hamish Hamilton in 2019. Nobel Laureate economist and philosopher Amartya Sen has called it a "gripping narrative of human predicament and surviving hope, yielding an extraordinary combination of philosophy and allegory -- a book you have to read."
A mechanical engineering graduate from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Raj did his MA in Journalism at the University of Southern California. He has taught in the international journalism program at University of California, Berkeley. Selected for the Berlin Artist-in-Residence Programme by the German Academic Exchange in 2012-13, Raj has been awarded IIT's Distinguished Alumnus Award for telling stories of a changing India with "courage and compassion."
